I'm a fairly new client seeking treatment for severe Depression ,anxiety ,PTSD as well as numerous other illnesses. Quick Hx. In 2012 I was diagnosed with Stage I Adenocarcinoma of the Lung. Cancer is the main reason I came to Penn. In 2017 my Cancer reoccurred after having surgery 5+ yrs.prior. I came back to Penn for treatment now awaiting results to see if I have metastatic disease to my right Lung. I was referred to Penn Charles O'Brien Treatment Center by my Radiation Oncologist from Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Since coming to PCOC I have come in contact with the most caring, compassionate professionals then any other agency, treatment facility or hospital I've been.Whether in or out patient , Pychiatric or Medical.I absolutely would recommend someone with any questions or concerns to contact someone about an appointment. Not sure why so few reviews. The Charles O'Brien Center is one of the most evidence-based treatment centers in the world and maybe that's the only minor problem which isn't really a problem at all but many in our field believe that empirical treatment isn't the most important aspect of treatment and while places like The University of Pennsylvania would be The Best place to receive cancer treatment, other "diseases" like addiction may be treated better as a softer science with a more personalized and individualized addiction treatment. As an addiction psychologist and certified alcohol and drug counselor practicing in Philadelphia I've seen some completely non scientific treatment approaches like 12-step facilitation treatments which only promote AA and have no legitimate tried and true tested therapies and I've seen some overly scientific treatment approaches with little flexibility and little compassion for self determination and individual differences. The Charles O'Brien falls nicely in between and is a good start especially for group treatments. I've only heard complaints about the amount of research participation that patients are asked to be involved in which of course is the one downside of being in a teaching learning institution like U Penn and so a lot of people recommend finding a local addiction counselor or licensed professional counselor or psychologist in addition to treatment at a large place like this. - Jeremy Frank PhD CADC
